Discover Sphalerite from Sweden, a zinc sulphide mineral with contrasting fluorescent responses under Long Wave and Short Wave UV.

GeoFossils has physically tested the specimens offered here. Under Long Wave (LW) UV at 365nm, they display white to yellow fluorescence. Under Short Wave (SW) UV, they display orange fluorescence. These observations relate to our stock; they are not inferred from the general behaviour of Sphalerite.

Specimens 168–181 are individually numbered and photographed. Select your preferred specimen number from the available variants.

UV fluorescence

UV wavelength Observed response
Long Wave (LW) – 365nm White to yellow fluorescence
Short Wave (SW) Orange fluorescence

Fluorescence intensity and distribution vary naturally between specimens. Lamp output, viewing distance and ambient lighting also affect the visible response. Photographs may differ from direct observation because of camera settings and lighting conditions.

Formation and mineralogy

Sphalerite is an important ore mineral of zinc. It forms in a range of geological environments, including hydrothermal systems and some sedimentary deposits.

Its composition commonly includes iron substituting for zinc, represented by the formula (Zn,Fe)S. Natural differences in composition contribute to variation between specimens.

Viewing your UV mineral

For the clearest response, view your specimen in a dark environment using a suitable mineral UV lamp. Test each wavelength separately to appreciate the contrasting fluorescence.

Follow the UV equipment manufacturer’s safety instructions. Avoid direct eye and skin exposure to UV radiation, particularly when using SW equipment.

Care instructions

Sphalerite is relatively soft and has perfect cleavage. Handle carefully to minimise scratching, chipping and breakage.

Store separately from harder minerals where practical. Remove dust gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid abrasive cleaning methods or harsh household chemicals.

Location

Sweden

A more precise mine or locality has not been established, so we do not attribute these specimens to a specific Swedish locality.

Please note you will receive the exact mineral as shown in image.

Choose the corresponding specimen number to receive your selected piece. Each specimen is naturally unique, with variations in shape, colour, surface characteristics and fluorescent response.
