Discover the fluorescent colours of your mineral collection with this Filtered Short Wave (SW) and Long Wave (LW) UV Torch, supplied complete with a USB charger.

Available in Purple or Black, this torch features long wave UV on one side and short wave UV on the other, allowing you to explore how your specimens respond to different ultraviolet wavelengths.

GeoFossils selected these torches for both viewing and photographing fluorescent minerals, based on our experience using them with our own stock.

Long Wave (LW) UV – 365nm and 395nm

The long wave side provides 365nm and 395nm UV-A for viewing minerals that fluoresce under long wave ultraviolet light. Different specimens may display different colours, patterns and levels of fluorescence under these wavelengths.

Short Wave (SW) UV – 254nm

The opposite side provides 254nm UV-C through a quartz lens. Quartz allows the short wave ultraviolet light to pass through the lens and reach the specimen, enabling you to view minerals that respond to short wave UV.

Some minerals respond to SW but show little or no fluorescence under LW, while others display different colours under each.

Filtered Light for Clearer Fluorescence

Unwanted visible light can overwhelm a specimen with a blue glow, making its fluorescent colours harder to see and photograph.

These torches use filtered UV light to reduce unwanted visible light, giving a clearer view of the specimen’s fluorescent response.

In our own photography setup, this has helped us capture fluorescent colours more faithfully, with less interference from visible blue light.

Please Note

Not all minerals fluoresce. Fluorescent colour and intensity vary between specimens and UV wavelengths. For clearer viewing, use in a darkened environment.

Photographic results depend on the specimen, ambient lighting, camera settings and equipment. The torch does not guarantee exact colour reproduction in every photograph.

UV Safety

This torch emits ultraviolet light, including 254nm UV-C. Avoid direct exposure to eyes and skin. Never look into the light or shine it towards people or animals.

Use UV protective eyewear suitable for 254nm, 365nm and 395nm, and follow the manufacturer’s operating and safety guidance. Keep out of reach of children.
