This Rainbow Moonstone 6 Sided Pendulum is crafted from natural feldspar and polished into a classic six-sided faceted point.

Each pendulum is suspended from a silver plated chain and finished with a round Clear Quartz holding bead, providing a comfortable point from which to hold the pendulum.

Rainbow Moonstone is the widely recognised trade name for predominantly white to translucent Labradorite that can display flashes of blue and, in some specimens, green, yellow, gold or other spectral colours.

This striking optical phenomenon is known as labradorescence. As the pendulum moves or is viewed from different angles, light interacts with microscopic structures within the feldspar, allowing flashes of colour to appear and disappear.

Despite its familiar name, Rainbow Moonstone is mineralogically different from traditional Moonstone. Both belong to the feldspar family, but Rainbow Moonstone is generally a variety of Labradorite rather than conventional orthoclase Moonstone.

Natural variations in transparency, inclusions and labradorescence make every pendulum individually distinctive.

Suitable for mineral and crystal collectors, traditional dowsing practices, decorative collections or as a distinctive gift.

Rainbow Moonstone belongs to the feldspar mineral family, one of the most important groups of rock-forming minerals on Earth.

The material commercially known as Rainbow Moonstone is generally a light-coloured or white variety of Labradorite, a member of the plagioclase feldspar series.

Its most distinctive feature is labradorescence. This optical effect is structural rather than a surface coating or added colour. Light interacting with internal structures within the feldspar produces flashes that become visible at particular viewing angles.

For this reason, the strength and colour of the flash can change dramatically as an individual pendulum is moved.

Is Rainbow Moonstone Really Moonstone?

Rainbow Moonstone is a trade name rather than a precise mineralogical identification.

Traditional Moonstone is generally associated with feldspar material displaying an optical phenomenon known as adularescence, producing the characteristic soft, floating glow for which Moonstone is famous.

Rainbow Moonstone is generally white Labradorite and displays labradorescence instead.

Both materials belong to the wider feldspar family, which helps explain their similarities, but they should not be regarded as mineralogically identical.

The name Rainbow Moonstone is nevertheless firmly established within the international gemstone, jewellery and crystal trades.

What Causes the Rainbow Flash?

The coloured flashes seen within Rainbow Moonstone are produced by labradorescence.

Light enters the feldspar and interacts with microscopic internal structures. Certain wavelengths of light are reflected back towards the viewer, producing the characteristic blue or multicoloured flash.

The effect depends heavily on viewing angle and lighting.

A pendulum may therefore appear predominantly white or translucent from one direction before revealing a strong blue, green, gold or multicoloured flash when turned.

Is Rainbow Moonstone the Same as Labradorite?

Rainbow Moonstone is generally considered a light-coloured variety of Labradorite, so the two materials are closely related.

The commercial distinction is largely based on appearance.

Material sold simply as Labradorite commonly has a darker grey body colour, whereas Rainbow Moonstone typically has a white, colourless or translucent appearance with contrasting flashes of colour.

Both can display labradorescence.

Please Note

Rainbow Moonstone Disclosure: Rainbow Moonstone is the established trade name for predominantly white or translucent Labradorite displaying labradorescence. It should not be confused mineralogically with traditional orthoclase Moonstone.

Rainbow Moonstone is a natural feldspar material, so body colour, transparency, inclusions, internal features and the colour, position and intensity of labradorescence will vary between individual pendulums.

The characteristic flash is dependent on lighting and viewing angle. Not every surface or viewing position will display labradorescence simultaneously.

Feldspar also possesses natural cleavage, so internal lines and other structural features can occur within the material and are not automatically signs of damage.
