Philippinite Tektite Specimen

Product Description

Own a genuine Philippinite Tektite, a naturally formed impact glass from the Philippines and part of the vast Australasian tektite strewn field.

Philippinites formed approximately 790,000 years ago during the Australasian tektite-forming impact event. The enormous energy generated by the impact melted terrestrial surface material and ejected it into the atmosphere, where the molten material cooled rapidly before returning to Earth as natural glass.

These specimens are characterised by their dark brown to black colour and naturally sculpted surfaces. Pits, grooves, indentations and irregular textures can develop through a combination of original formation processes and subsequent terrestrial weathering.

Every Philippinite is naturally different. Shape, dimensions, surface texture and appearance will vary between specimens, reflecting both their formation and their long geological history.

What is a Philippinite Tektite?

A Philippinite is the regional name given to tektites recovered from the Philippines.

Unlike a meteorite, a tektite does not originate from the impacting extraterrestrial body itself. Philippinites are terrestrial material transformed into natural glass by the extraordinary temperatures and pressures associated with a meteorite impact.

Molten material was ejected from the impact region, travelled through the atmosphere and cooled into glass before falling back to Earth's surface.

Philippinites belong to the same Australasian tektite event as Australites found in Australia, although their appearance and preservation can differ considerably.

Authenticity & Provenance

These specimens are supplied as genuine Philippinite Tektites from the Philippines, belonging to the Australasian tektite strewn field.

GeoFossils sources tektites and impact-related material through established suppliers and collectors, with locality and provenance forming an important part of specimen identification.

Care Instructions

  • Handle with clean, dry hands.
  • Avoid dropping the specimen onto hard surfaces, as natural glass can chip or fracture.
  • Keep away from abrasive materials that could damage the natural surface.
  • If cleaning is required, use a soft brush and water before allowing the specimen to dry thoroughly.
  • Store separately from harder minerals where practical.

Please Note

  • You will receive the exact specimen selected from the variant menu and shown in the images.
  • Every Philippinite Tektite is naturally unique.
  • Natural variations in shape, dimensions, colour, surface texture, pits, grooves and weathering are expected and form part of each specimen's individual geological history.
  • Natural surface irregularities are characteristics of the material and should not be considered defects.
