Siderite is an iron carbonate mineral with the chemical formula FeCO₃. Its key element, Iron (Fe), appears on the periodic table with the atomic number 26. Siderite crystallises in the trigonal system, forming rhombohedral crystals that range in colour from pale yellow to deep brown. Its lustre can be vitreous to pearly, and it is frequently found in association with minerals such as quartz, fluorapatite, cassiterite, and wolframite.

This specimen originates from the world-famous Panasqueira Mine in Covilhã, Castelo Branco, Portugal, a locality celebrated for producing high-quality siderite crystals often accompanied by other classic Panasqueira minerals. Its aesthetic crystal habits, combined with the locality’s prestige, make siderite specimens highly sought after by mineral collectors worldwide. With a hardness of 3.5–4.5 on the Mohs scale, siderite is durable enough for display while still preserving delicate details of its crystal form.
