Despite its name, New Jade is not true jade but a form of serpentine, a magnesium silicate hydroxide mineral ((Mg,Fe)₃Si₂O₅(OH)₄) with a Mohs hardness of 3–6. Its soft green tones come from the presence of iron and other trace minerals.
