Cassiterite is a tin oxide mineral with the chemical formula SnO₂, the primary ore of tin. Its dominant element, Tin (Sn), has an atomic number of 50 on the periodic table. Cassiterite crystallises in the tetragonal system and often appears as lustrous prismatic or pyramidal crystals, ranging in colour from deep brown to black, sometimes with golden or reddish hues in gem-quality specimens.

This piece comes from the world-famous Panasqueira Mine in Portugal, one of the most celebrated European localities for high-quality Cassiterite crystals. The mine is renowned for producing superbly sharp, highly lustrous specimens often associated with quartz, siderite, fluorapatite, and ferberite. With a hardness of 6–7 on the Mohs scale and an adamantine lustre, Cassiterite is both durable and visually striking, making it a prized addition to any mineral collection.
