This Carnelian 6 Sided Pendulum is crafted from natural Carnelian and polished into a classic six-sided faceted point.
Each pendulum is suspended from a silver plated chain and finished with a round Clear Quartz holding bead, providing a comfortable point from which to hold the pendulum.
Carnelian is an orange to reddish-brown variety of Chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of Quartz. Its distinctive warm colouration is associated with iron compounds within the material and can range from translucent pale orange and rich burnt orange through to deeper red and brownish tones.
Unlike the large visible crystals associated with materials such as Clear Quartz or Amethyst, the Quartz crystals within Chalcedony are microscopic. This extremely fine structure contributes to Carnelian's smooth appearance and makes it particularly suitable for polishing and carving.
Carnelian has been valued as an ornamental and gemstone material for thousands of years, with archaeological examples demonstrating its use for beads, seals, jewellery and carved objects across several ancient cultures.
Natural variations in colour, translucency, inclusions and pattern make every Carnelian pendulum individually distinctive.
Suitable for mineral and crystal collectors, traditional dowsing practices, decorative collections or as a distinctive gift.

Carnelian belongs to the Chalcedony group of microcrystalline Quartz materials.
Rather than forming the large individual crystals familiar in Rock Crystal or Amethyst, Chalcedony consists of extremely fine intergrowths of silica minerals.
Carnelian's characteristic orange, red and brownish colouration is associated primarily with iron compounds dispersed through the material.
Its combination of durability, colour and ability to take a high polish has contributed to Carnelian's extensive use as an ornamental material throughout human history.
Is Carnelian a Type of Quartz?
Yes.
Carnelian is a variety of Chalcedony, which belongs to the wider Quartz family.
The important difference is crystal size. Clear Quartz contains crystals that can develop into large visible forms, whereas the crystalline structure within Chalcedony is microscopic.
Carnelian is therefore correctly associated with Quartz while having a noticeably different appearance from transparent Rock Crystal.
What Gives Carnelian Its Orange Colour?
Carnelian's characteristic orange, red-orange and reddish-brown colours are associated primarily with iron compounds within the Chalcedony.
Differences in the concentration and oxidation state of iron contribute to the considerable natural variation seen between individual pieces.
As a result, one Carnelian pendulum may appear bright orange and translucent while another may display deeper red, brown or more opaque areas.
Is Carnelian the Same as Red Agate?
Carnelian and Red Agate are closely related Chalcedony materials, but the names are not necessarily interchangeable.
Carnelian is generally characterised by relatively uniform orange to reddish-brown colouration.
Agate is also Chalcedony but is typically distinguished by visible banding, zoning or patterned layers.
Some commercial material can display characteristics of both, which has resulted in overlapping trade terminology.
This product is sold as Carnelian.
The Historical Use of Carnelian
Carnelian has a remarkably long history as an ornamental stone.
Its durability, warm colour and ability to take a fine polish made it suitable for beads, jewellery, seals, amulets and carved objects in the ancient world.
Examples of worked Carnelian have been discovered at archaeological sites associated with ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley and other early cultures.
Its long history makes Carnelian interesting not only as a geological material but also as an example of humanity's relationship with naturally occurring decorative stones.
