Amethyst and natural Citrine are both varieties of Quartz. Amethyst typically owes its purple colour to trace iron and natural irradiation within its crystal structure. Controlled heating of Amethyst can alter its colour, producing yellow, golden and orange shades commonly marketed within the crystal trade as heat-treated Citrine.
