Pietersite is a brecciated chalcedony composed primarily of quartz (SiO₂) intergrown with crocidolite and other amphibole minerals. Its striking chatoyancy comes from the fibrous structure of these inclusions, with colours ranging from deep blues and golds to reds and browns. It has a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7, making it durable for jewellery.
