Chrysoberyl is an aluminium beryllium oxide with the chemical formula BeAl₂O₄. Its defining elements are Beryllium (Be, atomic number 4) and Aluminium (Al, atomic number 13) on the periodic table. Chrysoberyl crystallises in the orthorhombic system and is most recognised for its vitreous lustre and colour range from yellow-green to golden hues, though colourless and brown examples also occur.
Chrysoberyl is distinct from beryl, despite their similar names, and is best known in gem form for producing varieties such as cat’s eye chrysoberyl and alexandrite. In its natural mineral form, chrysoberyl is valued by collectors for its sharp crystal habit, high hardness, and rarity. With a hardness of 8.5 on the Mohs scale, it is one of the hardest known natural minerals, surpassed only by corundum and diamond.
