Astrophyllite is a rare and visually striking silicate mineral recognised for its dramatic star-burst crystal formations. The name derives from the Greek words astron meaning star and phyllon meaning leaf, referring to the distinctive radiating blades that form within the host rock.
This mineral belongs to the Astrophyllite Group and is a complex potassium, iron and titanium silicate that crystallises in the triclinic crystal system. It commonly forms bladed or radiating aggregates with a metallic bronze to golden sheen set against a darker matrix.
Astrophyllite is highly sought after by mineral collectors due to its rarity and unique crystal structure. Each specimen forms naturally within the host rock, creating individual patterns that resemble natural starbursts or solar flares. Because of its relatively soft hardness of around 3–4 on the Mohs scale, it is typically preserved as a mineral specimen or polished slab rather than used for faceted gemstones.
Some of the most desirable Astrophyllite specimens originate from the Khibiny Massif in Murmansk Oblast on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. This region is well known for producing exceptional mineral specimens formed within alkaline igneous rocks such as nepheline syenite.
Each Astrophyllite specimen displays a completely unique arrangement of golden to bronze crystal sprays within the surrounding matrix, making every piece a distinctive addition to any mineral collection.
Metaphysical Properties
Astrophyllite is often associated with transformation, self-discovery and expanded awareness. The mineral’s radiant crystal patterns symbolise illumination and the unfolding of personal insight.
Many people work with Astrophyllite during meditation or reflection practices to support deeper understanding, encourage personal growth and reveal hidden patterns within life experiences.
