Cinnabar is a mercury sulphide mineral with the chemical formula HgS. Its primary element, Mercury (Hg), has the atomic number 80 on the periodic table. Cinnabar crystallises in the trigonal system and is most famous for its deep scarlet to crimson red colour and resinous to adamantine lustre. It frequently occurs as granular to massive forms, though well-defined crystals can be strikingly beautiful.

This specimen originates from the Las Cuevas Mine in the Almadén Mining District, Ciudad Real, Castile-La Mancha, Spain — one of the most historically significant mercury deposits in the world. The Almadén mines have been worked for over 2,000 years and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for producing some of the finest cinnabar specimens ever discovered. With a hardness of 2–2.5 on the Mohs scale, cinnabar is relatively soft but valued highly for its intense colour and rarity.
