Geological Formation

Campo del Cielo belongs to the IAB-MG (Main Group) coarse octahedrite class of iron meteorites. These meteorites formed within the metallic core regions of an early differentiated asteroid, where molten iron and nickel cooled extremely slowly over millions of years. This gradual cooling produced the distinctive crystalline structure characteristic of coarse octahedrites.

Following its impact in northern Argentina, portions of the meteorite remained buried within silica-rich sediments. Over thousands of years, groundwater carrying dissolved silica penetrated weathered areas of the meteorite. This natural alteration process, known as silicification, partially replaced the original iron with silica minerals while preserving the specimen's overall form. The result is a rare meteorite that records both its extraterrestrial origin and its geological history on Earth.
